So to fully grasp the understanding of my sharing, let’s discuss what intuition actually is. How does one know if they have ever experienced this phenomenon or not? Intuition is an inner knowing or perception of truth independent of any reasoning process.
Have you ever had a thought of someone and then within minutes that person called you? Or maybe your phone rings, and before you ever glance to see who it is, you know it’s your Mom? Maybe you’ve felt the urge to call a friend just to check in with them and it turns out they are having a really crummy day and needed to hear your voice in that moment. Have you ever felt urged to take a different route to work at the last minute for no apparent reason only to find out later there was a major accident on your regular route and you avoided it? These are just a few ways intuition can show up in your life.
Although intuition is something we all have the ability to access, for some it comes more naturally and for others we consciously work to develop it. It’s very much like a muscle, we can call it our spiritual muscle, in that the more we use it the stronger and more reliable it becomes.
Understanding the ways we can receive intuitive information is helpful in creating an awareness to the incoming messages. We can receive our intuitive hits through seeing, hearing, feeling and knowing. We refer to this as the clairs. There are 4 clairs or 4 ways intuition will comes to us. They are Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, Clairsentience and Claircognizance. Clair means “Clear” so Clairvoyance means “Clear seeing”, Clairaudience is “Clear hearing”, Clairsentience is “Clear Feeling” and Claircognizance is “Clear Knowing”.
Now before we go into deeper explanation of the clairs I want to say that we all have the ability to access each of these 4 clairs. However, in the beginning it is not uncommon to find that you primarily access one or two of them consistently. So it is safe to say that you might find you have a predominate clair and a secondary clair as you begin to explore your gifts of intuition. However, with practice one can easily begin to access all 4 clairs and this is an ideal scenario as it expands your ability to receive the information with greater ease and variation.
So let’s dive into these amazing clairs shall we? First I would like to clear up any false beliefs that one clair is better than another. They are all equally valuable and the ability to access one clair with more ease over another will vary person to person. This is to say that if someone you know can access their clairvoyance “clear seeing” with greater ease, where you tend to access your clairsentience “clear feeling” with greater ease this does not make you less intuitive than them.
For some reason clairvoyance seems to be the most coveted so to speak of all the clairs, as if it is somehow the superior clair. This is absolutely not true. I used to really beat myself up because in my early training other students would get visions and see really clearly all the time. I seemed to struggle with seeing, and at the time I could hear my guidance more clearly than I could see. I so wanted to be like the others and instead of honoring my strengths, I would constantly compare myself to those who could see and label myself less psychic than them. This was a very disheartening and unnecessary approach with myself, but it’s what I chose for me in those moments. It wasn’t until many years and much practice later that I started to tap into all 4 of my clairs and I realized that putting myself down and comparing my psychic abilities to others was actually limiting my capacity early on. The more we acknowledge and embrace our strengths and gifts of intuition the more it will show up for us. If we choose to ignore it and dishonor it, which is actually a form of suppression, it can cut us off from receiving our intuition all together. So whatever your dominate clair is in the beginning embrace it, honor it, acknowledge it when it shows up and understand that the more you acknowledge it however it shows up the more it will flow forth freely for you.
Someone who is clairvoyant “clear seeing” will often receive their guidance visually. Those who are clairsentience “clear feeling” will receive their guidance through their feelings. The clairaudient “clear hearing” person will receive their guidance through hearing and the claircognizant “clear knowing” persons guidance will come through a thought or they will just have a knowing.
So lets use the scenario of someone contemplating a move from New York to California. The clairvoyant person might look up and see a vehicle in front of them with a California license plate as a confirmation that the move would serve their higher good. The clairaudient person might hear a song on the radio “Hotel California” as their confirmation. The clairsentience person might feel lightness or tingling in their body when contemplating the move to California and heaviness when thinking of staying in New York. And the claircognizant person just knows without any specific reason that the move is a good move for them.
You can get a good idea of which is your predominate clair by listening to how you communicate to others.
If I’m predominately clairvoyant I might use words like, “I see what you’re saying.”
If I’m predominately clairaudient I’ll use words like, “I hear what you’re saying.”
A clairsentient will use ‘feeling’ words, for example; “I felt like she didn’t understand what I was saying.”
And last but not least the claircognizant will say, “I know exactly what you mean.”
There are numerous books and online resources to help you develop your intuition. In working with clients I offer intuitive guidance for them during each session as their guides bring information forth, but more importantly I teach them how to access their intuitive gifts themselves. In my experience a daily meditation practice is the most beneficial tool in developing ones intuition. The quieter and more still we can become inside, the easier it is to recognize the subtleties around us such as intuitive hits. Visualization exercises, journaling, drawing, painting, crystals, energy work these are all tools and exercises that will support the natural expansion of intuition.
I truly believe we are meant to navigate this life from a place of empowerment and this is what using your intuition does for you. It allows you to access divine guidance from within instead of seeking for all the answers outside of yourself, and when we are following our intuition we can never go wrong. The intuition will always guide you toward that which will serve your highest and greatest good.
Many blessings to you as you begin to embrace your gifts and begin living an intuitively guided lifestyle.
